Establishment Of The State Of Israel: Impact Upon Bedouin Of The Negev

Similar to the plight of America's indigenous Indian population when the Puritan colonists settled upon their territory, the Arab Bedouin in the Negev – a nomadic people who comprise twelve percent of Palestinian's minority population (Anonymous, 2004) – were forced into a miserable existence replete with loss of rights to land ownership and grazing, agricultural desecration, lack of water access, substandard education and general misery cast upon them ever since the 1948 War when eighty percent of the natives either fled from or were thrown off their property when the State of Israel came into existence. Those who remained were relegated to second-rate military plots without opportunity to return to and cultivate their own land. That was not the worst of it, however, when one considers the inhumane treatment unrecognized villagers have historically endured at the hands of a merciless Israeli government. That they were half a million strong did nothing to maintain their cultural strength against other indigenous peoples of Gondar. With religion at the crux of this separation, it comes with great relief that this virtually desolated ethnic population was both discovered and rescued from its collapse into complete destruction. Turkey's economy is rather typical of successfully developing markets in that it enjoys an overall upward trend but suffers from occasional setbacks as all markets do. What sets Turkey's Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) apart from the markets of other developing nations is that its overall upward trend is so very impressive. In the first six months of 2000, the ISE was the best-performing of all the world's markets in developing nations, posting a six-month total return of 171.8%. The ISE has been dominated by local retail investors for much of its history, but international institutional investors accounted for 51% of the ISE's capitalization by 1999.
